ancient sunken city boundary
No trace of Nerida's boundary exists anymore. The thriving city used to sit on Australia's southern coast over 20,000 years ago, but it was flooded during the end of the ice age. One thousand years ago Sacred, Nerida's creator, rediscovered the lost city and stumbled onto the talisman that became Nerida.
Over time the ocean wiped away all traces of the sunken city. Humans would eventually rediscover similar lost cities off the coast of Northern Australia, but they would never find Nerida's boundary.
Nerida isn't bothered by this. She considers the kelp forests her home now. She's a thousand years old now and thus accepts how the world ebbs and flows.

elemental
ocean currents
Nerida can control ocean currents so that they push her and others where she wants to go. The elemental appears as water flowing off her wings even when she's on land or in the air. Her abilities don't work as well in freshwater, but they help a little.

enchantment
calming seas
Her enchantment appears as a shining star above her head in between her antlers. It ensures that people, ships, ocean animals or anyone else in the sea will find smooth, calm waters. It doesn't impact the ocean directly like an elemental. Instead it brings peace and provides assurance that the water will be serene.
Nerida's ivory talisman was created to elicit these same properties.

blessing
loved by sealife (marine biome)
The loving energy Nerida put out into the world was given back to her in the form of this blessing. Sea life can sense Nerida's altruistic, compassionate nature and they love her in return. Sometimes this looks like fish or other creatures helping her when needed, but most of the time this is just an energy emitted by those around her.

Nerida is wise, powerful and sensible. Even though she's is "only" a thousand years old she feels much, much older because her talisman was carved in the prehistoric era. She is constantly thankful to the elephant that grew her ivory, the carver that created her talisman, and Sacred for transforming her into an esk. Her gratitude and humility are always evident in her interactions.
She spends a lot of her time gliding through the water like a giant manta ray. She's on a mission to explore the whole world starting with the oceans. She has no pattern in mind and no timeframe to accomplish her goal. She views every place on the planet as equally important as every other, though she considers the oceans her home. She loves being sidetracked and can easily be convinced to travel with friends or help out when needed. She's very soft spoken despite her size. Most of the time she's gentle and sweet. She's opinionated, but not hurtful, making her great at giving feedback. She's always tactful even when voicing disdain for someone or thing. Due to her poise she's terrifying when angry because of how well composed she stays. Her anger isn't brash and violent, it's as cold and icy like brine. This makes her incredibly effective at whatever she's trying to accomplish with her fury. |
That said, she very rarely taps into that type of anger. Her talisman was created to calm the sea and also provide support and comfort. As an esk it's vitally important to her to maintain those same qualities. Her enchantment helps calm the waters, her elemental can direct the currents, and her soothing, reassuring nature as an esk provides comfort to those around her. Her "beloved by sealife" blessing reflects the feelings already exhibited by those around her.
Nerida also works with Zenzee as part of her cohort of healers. They travel together for periods of time to provide assistance where they can. They fight natural disasters and also help in smaller ways like mending wounds or reuniting lost animals with their families.

Over 20,000 years ago a carver decided to create a talisman for calming the sea to protect against storms, and someday it would become Nerida. It was made from ivory, and resembled a fish shaped loosely into a hook. It was carved skillfully with passion and intent.
The carver wore the talisman as a pendant while venturing into rough waters. Sea faring vessels at the time were just rudimentary rafts, but that didn't deter that drive for adventure. Unfortunately, the talisman could only protect the carver for so long, and one day a storm brought them both to the bottom of the ocean. The talisman was lost, and later Nerida would remember this part of her history later as an esk. She felt guilty and longed for the carver, she blamed herself for the downfall. |
Thousands of years passed and the talisman washed up on a beach. It was discovered by a seafaring community where it was treasured for many years. But once again the talisman was lost when slippery fingers accidentally let it fall back into the ocean. The talisman spent another few thousand years lost again. The human world changed too and the talisman settled into the ruins of an ancient, sunken city. Finally, 1000 years ago, Sacred found the talisman and transformed it into Nerida.
As an esk Nerida was finally able to let go of the guilt she felt for the carver's death. Sacred helped her realize that she was holding herself to unrealistic expectations. She explained that some events are our of our control, and not even the strongest esk can always prevent natural disasters. Sacred also believed Nerida was able to provide a sense of comfort and companionship in the carver's last moments, and that was essential.

Sacred took Nerida back in time so they could see her ancient, sunken city at its height. But Nerida could only stay for a few seconds before feeling extreme discomfort and popping back into her own present. She realized that she can't time travel meaning she wouldn't be able to see the carver or go with Sacred to "the present." She wasn't bitter though, just thankful for the gift of life that the carver and Sacred had given her. She decided to explore the whole ocean and continue bringing comfort to others like she did when she was a talisman.

Sacred • Nerida's creator, mentor and friend
Nerida admires Sacred greatly, and loves her unconditionally. They don't see each other often, so it's extra special when they do reconnect. Nerida values her opinion above all others, and Sacred thinks very highly of her as well. Sacred is elusive, but she makes sure to seek out Nerida between her travels. Enkira • close friend Nerida's connection to the marine biome is similiar to Enki's connection to her freshwater home. Enki admires Nerida for her ability to love and trust others easily, something that's hard for her to do. Nerida doesn't see herself as a divine being, but Enki thinks of her that way. Nerida is the only esk Enki is soft and gentle towards. Sprite • friend, Nerida is a maternal figure for Sprite Nerida helped make Sprite feel welcome in the mass of esks that appeared on the beach together during the marine biome event. Sprite looks up to Nerida and they stayed close after the event. |
Nemmi • friend
Nemmi and Nerida met when Nemmi boldly decided to swim as far into the ocean as she could. She was very far away from her boundary and biome, and began to become exhausted. She was determined to test herself though. Nerida watched, amused, and eventually offered help, which Nemmi declined. The two became friends.

Nerida would never perform a transformation lightly. She feels there is a weight of responsibility that comes with them. So far she hasn't done any.
