Koia lives in an ancient montane rainforest in Bolivia. Her boundary is near the Zongo Valley high up in elevation. The forest is even older than her.

Nature feature
Koia's nature feature, the Epidendrum calanthum is a type of orchid. This one is specifically from the tropical montane forests of Bolivia, and only occurs naturally in surrounding areas in South America.
familiar
letitia's thorntail
Koia and her hummingbird familiar act as one unit. They don't speak to each other because their minds operate together, so it's unnecessary. Koia's familiar doesn't have a name because she considers her bird to be an extension of herself; they have the same internal monologue. She sees her familiar as her literal wings, eyes and beak. Just like Koia, the Letitia's thorntail is incredibly elusive. It's not well documented, and humans don't know much about it. Koia is indifferent to humans at best, so she rarely allows them to see her familiar. |
Koia is approximately 20 million years old, but she acts much younger. She's playful with animals and silly with young hatchlings. She has a lot of love for the birds and animals around her home.
She's much more tentative with esks, and will be aggressive if she feels they don't respect her. She can be territorial, and is likely to be a little petty. She's too old to care what strangers think about her. If she finds an esk truly in need of help she'll be empathetic and treat them like a vulnerable animal. She is mostly indifferent towards humans. Occasionally she'll follow one around for awhile just to see what it does. In general they don't interest her though since she can't interact with them. |
Koia was just newly hatched hummingbird when Ikkit transformed her approx. 20 million years ago. Ikkit had been wandering the treetops of the montane forest in modern day Bolivia and found a small nest of eggs guarded by Koia's mother. Ikkit decided to play a little game where he'd move the nest a foot away or so just to mess with Koia's mother. Every time he'd do it she'd realize what he'd done and try to attack him. Ikkit loved this "game" they'd play, despite her rage.
He was in the middle of swiping the nest to a new direction when Koia's egg began to hatch. He didn't notice at first, and the newly hatched hummingbird tipped the angle of the nest in a way Ikkit hadn't expected. Koia tumbled out and into the rainforest leaves. Ikkit felt a dash of surprise, he hadn't actually meant to cause harm, he just wanted to annoy the mother hummingbird. |
He followed the path of the newborn hummingbird and found it laying helpless on the forest floor. He got close and the baby hummingbird lashed out at him, using all its strength to try and attack him back, as if this hatchling knew what Ikkit had done. He was thoroughly impressed at the brazenness of this tiny creature. He felt like it had beaten him in some way. In a flash of impulsivity he transformed the baby hummingbird into Koia. The transformation was almost immediate and the first thing she did was swipe a paw out at Ikkit aggressively. He laughed and sent his shadows out to antagonize her even more.
Ikkit and Koia barely spoke, he disappeared into the forest and she had to figure everything out by herself. She didn't even know she'd been a bird until animals nearby told her the story of her transformation. The animals raised her, and eventually she met kind esks that helped her too. Over the eons her seething hatred of Ikkit turned into a simmering disdain. She's not impressed by him, and his antics don't scare her. If given the opportunity she'll thwart his pranks and she loves watching him fume.

Ikkit • creator, enemy
Ikkit was in a particularly callous mood when he decided to play a prank on a mother hummingbird that led to Koia's transformation. Koia's first act as an esk was to attempt to fight Ikkit. He thought this was hilarious, and thus started a feud that would last for millions of years. Koia still hates him, but she doesn't actively plot against him. She'll bad mouth him to anyone she can though, and she's very weary of his friends.
Moth • friend
The two met when Koia found Moth secretly following her. She was considering lashing out at such rude behavior, but her heart warmed quickly when she realized Moth was just an innocent little critter. She discovered that they were drawn to the pretty petals on her back, like a moth to a flame. She has a soft spot for them that she has rarely felt in her millennia as an esk.
